Cremation Process & Ashes Availability
Ashes are usually available within a week after the cremation service has taken place. When cremation is the preferred option, it is necessary that some paperwork is completed for the cremation to be authorised. Ollie Burns & Sons Funeral Directors have these forms. They consist of the following:
- The funeral director gives some personal details of the deceased, the time and place of the cremation service, and the name and address of the executor / next of kin in order to allow permission for the cremation to take place.
- The executor or next of kin fills out this section in order to allow the cremation to take place.
- The attending doctor completes the medical form, which includes the deceased's medical history, the location of the death, the name(s) of the person(s) in attendance, and a statement confirming the deceased's identity and identification after death. The doctor who completes this form must be registered in Ireland for a minimum of two full years.
- In cases of sudden death, where a doctor has not been in attendance or is unavailable, or where no doctor is qualified more than two years, then the local coroner will usually give permission for the cremation to take place.
- All crematoria have a medical referee, who certifies that the cremation can proceed and declares that all requirements have been met.
After Cremation
Many families choose to keep their loved one’s Ashes at home or scatter them in a special place. There are also several other choices that can be considered when spreading your loved one’s Ashes:
- Columbarium Walls – The Ashes are placed in a niche behind an engraved plaque in a wall built or adapted for this purpose.
- Garden of Remembrance – The Ashes are buried in a plot for cremated remains, with name plaques to the side of the garden area.
- Cremation Plots – These are available in some cemeteries where your loved one’s Ashes can be buried in a small grave/plot, reserved specifically for Ashes.
- In addition to this, your loved one’s Ashes can be buried with your deceased family members in the family grave/plot.
